Lore

Thirteen times the leaves have fallen from the trees, every time reminding me of that fateful autumn morning, and the reason for my travels.

I come from the cold north, in the mountain woodlands of Scandinavia, a small village by the name of Skenande Häst. Home to only a few tribes, and no great legends, the most notable family was the house of Karlsson; the chieftain’s tribe. The Chieftain was a wise man, a hunter, and a healer. His wife, the mor of three, was the midwife of the village. They had two daughters, BriarBraid and Mara, and one son, I, Karr. Before my sisters and I were born and before my Far was chieftain (and my family head of the village), my FarFar and MorFar set out to trade with and see other lands. Even though they each had travelled to opposite ends of the Earth, they both came back having learned about a Christ who had walked the land, and whose word had spread throughout the known world. They brought back these lessons of peace and compassion for our family to hold to, and live by. Soon our family became well respected by the village and my Far became the chieftain under the direction of my grandfathers.

The 15th summer of my life, a group of young travelers from Wildwood came to our village. They were an interesting assortment of characters from different cultures, carrying a variety of weapons. The names of these young warriors were; Mazlolin, Davit Feathersqual, Morisato Keiichi, Hippie, Darlantan, and Killian Atreides. This was my first exposure to the fierce world outside. They told stories of battle, and creatures I had never heard of. They began to teach my sisters and me how to fight and defend the village, though my Far was not happy. When they set out the following spring, I wondered if that was the last time I would see these new friends.

The next fall, on a cool morning my Far took myself and the other young men hunting to prepare our winter stocks. As we walked through the woods I came into a clearing to find myself staring straight into the eyes of a giant bull moose. I readied my spear, held my ground, and as the bull came at me I lunged to the side and thrust my spear between its ribs deep into its heart. I took my knife to its throat and drunk from its blood, as was custom of our tribe upon our first hunting kill. The kill was cleaned and we spent two more days hunting. The third night, a cold and bitter windy night, we swore we heard screams on the wind. The fourth morning, on the trip back to Skenande Häst, we looked out to see a giant plume of smoke on the horizon.

The village was in ruins, bodies of men and women were strewn everywhere. Some were those of the assailants, but most were the people I had known my whole life. My Far, the rest of the hunting party, and I searched for survivors. Underneath the shambles of our home I found her, my younger sister, Mara, beaten and bloodied. A broken lid of a barrel in one hand and my Fars woodcutting axe in the other both covered in blood. As I wept I heard a comforting voice call out my name, and I remembered the meat cellar. I called to the rest of the young men to help me remove the rubble as my Far tended to my sister, who he realized still had breath. My Mor, the elders, children and some of the young mothers were still alive! My young sister had nearly given her life to protect them, and her bravery was never to be forgotten. My Mor informed us that my older sister BriarBraid, eldest daughter of House Karlsson, had been taken by the barbarian horde.

Since our people had been following the teaching of the Christ, we had no warriors, and had not well prepared for war and raiders. Now it seemed that it had become necessary for our people to learn. My Far charged me with the task of going out into the world to learn how to fight, and to find my older sister, while they rebuilt the village. My Mor spoke these words to me, “It may be a long and treacherous journey my son, but one day return, give us hope.” I laid a crown of woven forget-me-nots upon young Mara’s head and armed with weapons and armor from the fallen barbarians, I started off on my journey, promising I would see them all again.

My journeys lead me south, to the coast. Here I came across a school housed within the fortified walls of a monastery. I spent many years there, learning about the cultures of the world, growing in strength and in my faith. The monks who taught this school were no strangers to combat, and it was here I really started to gain experience in my fighting skills. Understanding the pillars of self-control, respect and humility, I took on the righteous doctrines of the monks, knowing that fighting was only to be done when no other options were left available. From this school I set out with Errol of Rodda, Lorcan O'Dullahan, and others across the sea. While crossing the sea, a storm exploded in the sky and the swells took our vessel into the depths.

When I awoke, I found myself alone, broken and on the banks of an unfamiliar land. I pulled myself through the mud, out of the open. I looked down to see it was my left arm and left leg that had broken, and at that moment everything went black. I came to in a panic. Where was I? No longer could I hear the sea, or feel the breeze. All I could feel was the pain and fever that had taken my body. Where was I, and who was this creature that had captured me? Then I heard a sound that sent a chill down my spine, and simultaneously a peace came over me. It was the sweetest voice I had ever heard, coming from the creature that was tending to my wounds. “Hush now, and be still. You are in the house of the Clan of the Sea. I am Leigh, the youngest of the house.” It was then she removed the mask she had been wearing, to reveal a girl of about my age, the most beautiful girl I had ever seen.

I spent two years with the Clan of the Sea, healing from my wounds, learning from them the ways of the sea, and teaching them of my lands, and my faith. I was married to Leigh that last spring, and together we set out for my homeland taking the eastern path around the water. It had now been seven summers since my departure from Skenande Häst.

We soon found ourselves in a dark, dead land. The shadows hid unknown horrors, and what the shadows did not hide, we fought. An ogre emerged in the dark of night, and broke my shield with one swing of its club. We fell back. With my sword at the ready and Leigh’s bow drawn, we prepared for further assault from our enemy. The ogre charged, and the memory of that Bull Moose all those years before came to me. As the creature drew near, Leigh shot the shoulder of the beast causing it to drop its club, and I quickly moved aside and felled our enemy with a direct blow to its heart. The Clan of the Sea had a tradition of using the bones of fallen beasts as parts of their armor. So my bride fashioned for me a helm, using the skull of our enemy, and reinforced the rest of my armor with the ribs, through which I had plunged my sword.

We continued our journey through the dark land, coming to mountain pass. The air smelled of decay and the sound of breathing could be heard echoing through the pass. Then came a booming voice that spoke these words, “You have entered the realm of the Dead men of Dunharrow, state your business, or die like all the rest.” Looking up I saw archers lining the cliffs, and could feel others closing in behind us. Knowing that we would not get out of a fight alive, we took a knee, laid down our arms, and spoke our business. What came next was most unexpected; Laughter. A large boisterous man emerged from deep in the mountain. “I am King Big Jimmy,” he said, “come, eat and drink with us!”

Here in the land of Dunharrow, I became a warrior. I had already learned how to fight, but it was they who first helped to hone my skills, they who first showed me battle. I am forever in their debt. We took time out of our journey home to learn. They helped in my search for my lost sister, and we camped with them and fought beside them for the better part or two years. Then one night around the fire I looked out to see a ghostly figure approach, “Wynesson.” I fell to my knees upon hearing my surname spoken, for it had not been heard by my ears since Skenande Häst. The figure pulled back her hood, and though I felt I had seen her before, she was not familiar to me. It was not till my eyes were drawn to her hair, and I saw three forget-me-nots woven into her braid, that I realized it was my younger sister, Mara. I wept with joy, seeing the sister I had almost lost, now a woman standing before me. She embraced me, and called me home.

Together, Mara, Leigh and I set out on the final leg of the journey home. My sister explained to us that, four years after I left, the group from Wildwood had returned, with BriarBraid in tow. She went on to say that they had come across the barbarian village, and saw her chained like a dog. It was Darlantan who dared to sneak into the village at night to free her, and they have been inseparable since that day.

It was a glorious return home. No fanfares were played, no horns sounded, but the whole family was back together. That night as I feasted with my parents and sisters, Leigh was introduced to all, and I had much drink with Darlantan. The next day I wasted no time organizing the people, and started teaching them the things I had learned. A couple of the Wildwood men, Mazlolin, and Hippie had stayed in the area after bringing BriarBraid home as well. They had helped another young warrior, Niko, organize and train an army of the realm known as Obsidian Hollow. They introduced me to him, and together, Niko and I continued to train Skenande Häst and Obsidian Hollow. A great allegiance was formed.

New, young, prospective warriors entered the realm regularly, hoping to learn from our unusual assortment of fighting styles. One day, I saw the face of one I had believed to be dead, Lorcan O'Dullahan. He had survived the sea, and explained how he had found himself in the care of Sir Murdock the Mad, and his host of House Dregoth. After many moons of eating and drinking together, I agreed to join him in a short trip to visit Lord Murdock’s house. I bid my family farewell, and entrusted, Niko and Mara with the protection of our lands. Together, Lorcan and I set out, for there was much to discuss.

We came to a camp, a sea of green, black and gold. This was the largest army I had ever seen. Lorcan took me to the long tent of the officers. There at the head of the table, sat the Lord Dictator, Sir Murdock the Mad. He greeted me warmly, and shared of his mug and an assortment of other beverages as well. We took a walk and he told me of his dream to have an army so large that wherever you go, you would have an ally. I shared with him my tale, and how my village had been attacked. How if we had friends like this House, we may not had suffered such a fate. We shook hands, and upon the finishing our conversation, he announced, “We have another sucker!” He set out duties for me as a guardsman. At least twice a season I would come and check in with him and that whenever House Dregoth needed aid I would come. With this, he gave his word, that should my home and realm ever need assistance, the House standing army would be there.

While in the camp I spent much time with other brothers and sisters from the northlands. They had formed a small unit within the house that the other members of the guard affectionately called Odin's Chosen (the name stuck with them). Impressed with my fighting abilities, and integrity, this group took me on as a Freeman. The Earl, Shagrath, added to Lord Murdock’s decree that they personally would be there if ever I was in need. Three weeks had passed since my arrival at camp, and it was time to return home once again.

Having forged a kinship with Lorcan over this journey, and our time at the monastery, we set back out to the Realm of Obsidian Hollow. Traveling light, and on horse, we made the journey back in three days. It was here, back in my homeland where my journey had started all those years before, that a new path for my life was about to be laid before me. My old friend Killian, now Sir Killian Atreides the Goat, Defender of the Stein, 5th Knight of Wolfpack of the High Plains, and the remnant of Wildwood, had been awaiting my return.

He had heard of the journey I had been on, the friends and the alliances I had made. He had known of my desire to learn how to fight since I was a young boy, and had now seen for himself that I had learned that fighting is only a small part of a warrior’s skill. He took me by the shoulders, and said to me, “For all your willingness to learn and to teach, the honor you live with, and the love you carry, I would like to take you as my squire.” Sir Killian set before me tasks to complete. Each of these tasks geared to better me in knowledge and wisdom, endurance, fighting prowess, compassion, and honor.

This shall be a long journey, and the hardest road I have yet travelled, but I welcome the honor and burden of this path as a Squire with open arms. May God’s favor be upon me, and his light guide my way.

Three years have passed since Sir Killian took me as his squire. I spent these years in service to the realm, my unit, and my family. Leigh bore me a son, a strong boy who we named Logan. I learned the ways of the armorer, the smith, and the garment maker. I took upon me a companion, Lorcan, to pass on to him all that I knew, and to retain to me. Then, the time came, and Sir Killian called me to him once again.

Upon completing my tasks Sir Killian was calling me to two final trials. The first a Vigil, to prepare my mind and heart. The second, to a warriors challenge, to test my skill and perseverance. It was on Oktober the 8th, 2016 before the LORD, my realm, my unit, my family, and all others who gathered near, that I completed these trials. It was then, on the field of my trials, that Sir Killian Atreides the Goat, Defender of the Stein, 5th Knight of Wolfpack of the High Plains, brought me forth before the Knights of Wolfpack and Sir Morpheus the Caretaker, and knighted me under Christ, as Ser Karr Wynesson, the Warrior of God, First Knight of Obsidian Hollow.

Now may my true journey, and mission begin.

Due to his Honor, Service, and desire to learn, I have decided to make my retainer, Lorcan O'Dullahan, my first squire. May he present himself well, and his name be written in legends.

Seasons turned and our journey together saw us through many perils. As a plague came over the land, we found refuge in our home of Obsidian Hollow, and fellowship amongst our brothers and sisters of House Dregoth. We spent what seemed like years buying our time till the turmoil was over. During these seasons, a young warrior by the name of Timber sought me out, and asked if I would take him on as a squire. We discussed his journey, his drive and desires for the future. Ultimately, I agreed, and Timber joined Lorcan and I on our journey as the World turned back to normal.

Seven years after the events of my knighting, and seeing Lorcan overcome many obsticals and trials, I brought him forth to my brotherhood of the Knights of Oldcastle. He completed his vigil, battled all friends who came, and found himself victorious. Laying my sword upon his head, it was my honor to name him, Sir Lorcan O'Dullahan the Steadfast, Third Knight of Obsidian Hollow. HipHip, Huzzah!!!
