Healer

From BelegarthWiki

In battlegames, a healer is a person who can remove hits from a combatant. They may also remove special effects from a player. Some may even be able to repair equipment and resurrect dead combatants. Healers are not defined in the Book of War, and they are not common in Belegarth battlegames.

Titles

Healers are never referred to as medics. Medics are called for legitimate medical emergencies. But healers do have several titles to be called by, based on flavor and gender. The following list of titles is ordered alphabetically.

  • Apothecary
  • Bishop
  • Cardinal
  • Cleric
  • Doctor
  • Healer
  • Herbalist
  • Kahuna
  • Lich
  • Necromancer
  • Pope
  • Priest
  • Priestess
  • Shaman

Common Abilities

Healing Poem/Incant
A poem, incantation, or rap must be completely recited without falter in order to heal a combatant. In Dagorhir, a healing poem must be no less than 180 syllables long and it restores health and equipment completely.
Laying On Of Hands
The target area must continuously be touched by the healer's palms to be healed. Usually accompanied by an incantation, regenerative count, or at least shouting the word "heal". In less strict play, laying on of feet is also acceptable.
Meditation
Any damage the healer takes or combat the healer engages in will interrupt their healing, and they'll have to start it over. They must focus on healing. The target of the healing usually must mutually meditate, as well.
Regenerative Count
The healer counts a certain number of seconds, then a hit is restored to a target area. An example would be vocalizing, "Three-re-gen, two-re-gen, one-re-gen, heal!" with each #-regen taking one second to say.
Resurrection (rez)
Seldomly, healers are allowed to heal dead combatants, such that they stop being dead. Non-necromantic healers can usually only rez their teammates, and only before the teammates clear the field, if they can rez at all.
Regents
Sometimes healers are required to expend limited regents to use their healing abilities. This can be shown through dumping a pouch of birdseed, among other ways.

Healing Notation

The measurement of normal healing is written in Hits Per Second, or hps. This will appear as #/# hps, where the first number is Hits restored and the second number is Seconds before the healing is effective. There are two placeholder symbols:

  • An asterisk (*) is a wildcard, which does whatever it must the best it can. In the Hits place, it means a full heal. In the Seconds place, it means an instant heal.
  • A question mark (?) is a wide range of values. In the Hits place, it means that the number of hits healed isn't always equal to a full heal and isn't always equal to any given number. In the Seconds place, it means that heal can theoretically take any amount of time.

Example: Dagorhir's healing is */? hps, giving a full heal after whatever time it takes for 180+ syllables to be recited.

History

Over one dozen years have passed since the ancient age of 1999, an arcaic time in which healing was allowed in regular combat. Attending an event, Kegg, along with many of the Knights of Numenor, devised a very convenient plan: they had a healing poem approved by the event, which they kept scribed on the insides of their shields. As such, they didn't need to memorize the poem, just read it aloud.

By the end of the Event, War Council was already discussing the removal of the healing section from the rules.
