THE AWAKENING

If you ask any void construct about their earliest memory, you will always get the same answer. It’s the moment when the aether began to expand ever outward, breaking away from the void as an act of betrayal against everything that the universe had known. But in that moment, as the aether stretched farther and farther, shards of the void persisted throughout the entirety of the aether's dominion. And that’s all a void construct is, a shard of the void eternally bonded to the material plane. Banjax had existed as long as any other void construct, but something new happened with her. The Void trolls call it The Awakening. When void constructs went from being harmless items with a void shard trapped in it, to fully autonomous beings. No one is quite sure what caused the awakening, perhaps it’s the ever growing hunger within the void attempting to raise an army against the aether, or perhaps it’s some cosmic miracle.

Awakening is a process. You gain certain senses before others, and sometimes it can take decades to develop all of them. Banjax awoke in a field, tied to a wooden cross. The first sense to arrive was hearing. Banjax heard the winds blowing through the corn, and the crows circling above. Then came sight. Banjax could see the beauty of the world for the first time, and for a moment Banjax thought maybe the aether isn’t the enemy. Banjax stood there for days, attached to her post. On the 5th day, something in the distance began to worry Banjax. Plumes of black smoke rose in the distance, growing ever closer. By the 7th day, the fire was nearly surrounding Banjax. It was at that moment she cried out and begged for her awakening to complete. And something answered her prayer. As the flames began to encircle her, she had gained the final sense, touch. She ripped herself from the post and began to run.

On the 10th day, after the flames had passed, banjax returned to her post, and saw the ground scorched and all life turned to ash. At that moment, Banjax had a realization. This destruction was not the doing of the void. The aether is deceiving it's creations, and disparaging the void. In that moment, disillusioned with both the void and the aether, Banjax let out a cackle that echoed out through the field, and filled the entire uncanny valley. The void has abandoned its values to wage a war on the aether. Neither side is on the right, and Banjax vowed to never align with either side. But how do you not align with the embodiment of everything and nothing?

You become chaos incarnate.

THE REINCARNATION

It was after Banjax met the void trolls that Braizen began experimenting on her. After countless nights of stitching and grafting the bodies of the trolls who had come before and embedding her with void shards, Banjax had a vision. She saw the void itself. It is known to be impossible to comprehend the true nature of “nothingness” but what Banjax saw was not nothing. In the darkness lives colors you cannot possibly fathom, vibrant light shines through yet you see only darkness. It was when Banjax awoke, that things truly changed. Her eyes opened and she exhaled. For the first time, she could breathe. She stood up and felt the ground beneath her feet, and saw the world through true eyes. It was a moment of joyousness. And it lasted for months, maybe even years. Every part on her body came from a different one of her troll ancestors, and every piece feels things differently. It took years to adjust to this, learning from those who came before her, even though their lessons may have been lost to time.

It was during her first battle as a troll that she began to resent what had been done. As she wielded her torch high in the air, protected by her coffin lid shield, something struck her face. Shearing the right side clean off, revealing what lies beneath. The rotting hay and mildewed burlap saw the sun once more, and Banjax felt something new; pain. She screamed in agony as it echoed through the barrens and her torch dropped to the fields below. The torch began to ignite the barrens, and once again she found herself being surrounded by flame in a field.

THE IGNITION

Through the flames that scorched the earth beneath her feet, Banjax had yet another vision. Her eyes focused on the fire, saw the light of a distant and ancient star. It hungered for fuel, for destruction, for consumption of all things in the flame of eternity. Banjax had seen the true forms of higher beings before, but what she saw in that star drove her mad. She stood in that field, with the flames encroaching toward her faster and faster, and Banjax smiled. She had always been a little crazy, she enjoyed sowing the seeds of chaos, and reaping its destruction. Her cackle had been heard throughout the land, to the point where Knights and Kings would shudder at its sound. But having seen the eye of a god, its shape branded into her mind, she began to laugh harder than ever before. She danced around and saw the flame swirling and twisting to her forsaken tango. As she felt this power coursing through her, Banjax knew her purpose. The petty squabbles between void and aether no longer mattered.

Everything had to burn at her hand.
