The Keys
The Begining
Long ago, when the deities of everything imaginable walked the earth, there was a village of Khajiits tucked between three mountains created by Khedun the deity of mountains. The Khajiits needed this protection during this time period because many destructive gods walked the Mortal Realms causing destroying mortals lives. The Mortal Realm was a free-for-all where they could use their powers as they pleased and this unregulated use of power caused many problems for the inhabitants of the mortal world. This story begins in the village protected by mountains or as it was called Rasina (it means Protection in the Khajiit language) and in this village lived three sisters that today are named Mirmadi, Sarefi, and Musta Vakona. Not much is known about how these three grew up, but what we do know about them is that as a result of their quest and their sacrifices to the Realm the Dieties granted them three requests.
A History Lesson for the Ages
For those who are not well versed in the history of Khajiit, I have some knowledge to bestow upon you. The most important piece of history is that the Deities of the world can’t easily use their powers in the Realm of the Gods, magic has a high cost there. However they can easily use magic in the Mortal Realm.
Eventually the damage the destructive gods wrought onto the world had become noticable enough that Thanee and Iniabi called upon the strongest and smartest of the Khajiit to make their way to The Rift and close it behind the destruction gods who were being lead across the Mortal Realm by Pissaron to The Rift. However The Rift must be closed on both sides by both a Immortal and Mortal soul. The three sister where some of many who embarked on this quest on behalf to the Dieties. Many of the records about their travels have been lost to the ages, but the pieces found note that they had much help on the way by the other monster races of the land. However the fate of each sister is well recorded in Khajiit history.
The youngest sister, Mirmadi, died on the quest to rid the realm of the destructive gods. When her sisters where asked what reward they wanted their first request was to bring their sister back. Thanee took Mirmadi’s soul and placed it back into her body. Some consider her one of the first Children of Ill Omen before there was a name for it. However she is also considered the God of the Past for Khajiit. Legend has it she wonders the Mortal Realm and protects the Khajiit’s bodies and spirits on their way to the afterlife for Thanee. Her symbol and prayers are often used on the gravesites of Khajiit to ask and provide protection for their dead loved ones. She is also known to wisper in the ears of Khajiit and provide visions of the past to help prevent their early deaths.
Sarefi was described as the most joyful and giving of the three sisters. Sarefi is often credited as the driving force for the sisters to begin the quest to The Rift. The second wish came from Sarefi, she was well awhere of the present pain and hurt that the Destruction Gods left on the Moral Realm. Her wish was to live long enough to help the world heal. As is the fical nature of Pissaron she granted Sarefi immortality because she could not conceive how long it would take the world to heal. Sarefi returned alone to Rasina and began the long journey of helping to heal the world. Pissaron to aid her in her quest granted her the ability to also see suffering happening in the present day. This gift along with her immortality means she is often referred to as the God of the Present. Ironically this name has a bit of a double meaning due to the holiday created in her honor called Gift-Day. The purpose of the holiday is to provide small gifts to those who have less than you in memory of Sarefi’s willingness to help even at the cost of her mortality. Followers of Sarefi often place a symbol of giving on their house and will open their houses as safe haven for those fleeing dangrous situations. Throughout Khajiit history there are many small stories of different prestess of Sarefi granting knowledge or harm throughout the Mortal Realm. Many scholars believe that these “prestesses” are Sarefi herself wondering the Mortal Realm providing a healing nudge as mortals continue to change with the times.
Finally, Musta Vakona was the eldest sister. She is known for her pursuit of the truth and in Rasina she was often called on as a wise women to help with disputes in the city. During the journey Musta Vakona learned that The Rift was not the only way for Dieties to make their way to the Mortal Realm. Musta Vakona asked for the knowledge and skills to prevent the distruction gods from returning and harming the Moral Realm again. Iniabi granted Musta Vakona immortality and a key to the Grand Library. The records never have Musta Vakona returning to Rasina, however it is believed that she ensured her younger sister returned and then used the key to the Grand Library. There she spent centeries learning all of the knowledge and magic she needed to prevent the keys from falling into the wrong hands. When she returned to the Mortal Realm she found a very different world then the one she left. To aid her in her quests she blessed the Khajiit with oracles and seers to have the sight that guides them to gate keys that in the wrong hands can reopen a gate between the different realms. These key are also very powerful in their own right and those blessed by Musta Vakona can use them to receive visions from the gods. However it requires years of training to be able to interpret the truth of the visions granted by the Keys. This knowledge that Musta Vakona granted these Khajiit earned her the title of God of the Future to the Khajiit.
Modern Times
In modern times these three sisters are shown as the Dieties of the past, present, and future. Their sacrifices and magic imparted on the Khajiit has helped to shape the modern versions of Khajiit seen today. While the Khajiit people have faced many tragedies, they often find allies in the other monster races across the realm. As Khajiit transition from a more nomadic people to have a place in cities and town across the Realm the impact of the three sisters can be seen in the tradition developed by the Khajiit in different areas.
