The Path of Bones

Prophetwiki.jpg

The Prophets are the most fanatical of The Great Hunt cultists. Whereas most cultists are of varying degrees of faith, those who follow the path of the Prophet have accepted the presence of the Dread Gods into their very soul. The seek to speak their Word and spread their unholy message to any who might listen. Masquerading as servants of their realms and people, their true heart beats with the blood of the Dread Gods. They are the masters of The Great Hunt, directly serving the Dread Gods who speak through them as well.

Those called to the path of the Prophet are expected to be masters of the combat arts. Proficiency in all styles is demanded because the eyes of all the Gods are upon them. Each style boasts its own challenge, and each has a different song to sing. The Prophet can hear the voices of the Gods in these sword songs, and raises them in their bloody worship.

A Prophet is also expected to create and maintain an armory. Each must be a bastion unto themselves. They may be of differing skill, as some are more gifted than others, but all must be able to build and instruct others how to build. In this way, they can keep up the Hunt without external support, as they must go into the wilds often, seeking their wisdom.

A telling trait of a Prophet is their involvement. Whether in a local realm or out on campaign, they are heavily imbedded in the goings on of the wider community. Though they may be secretive in their devotion, it runs deep and drives them to greater acts of service. This is due to the nature of critical intelligence: the more one knows about the Prey, the easier they are to catch. By inserting themselves into crucial processes, they are able to select potential hunts with greater accuracy.

While the Prophet is able to operate independently, they are made stronger by developing a network of followers. Selected from the most fanatical members of The Great Hunt, these devotees are instructed by those above them and in turn instruct those who are newer to the tradition. A Prophet teaches their Apostles, those who draw close to their own ascension. Those Apostles have underneath them their own Disciples, who have been selected by an Apostle for deeper spiritual instruction. Their Disciples are then tasked with guiding any new Zealots that have been drawn into deeper communion with the Dread Gods, preparing them to be taught directly by an Apostle.

But before one can truly become a Prophet, they must sacrifice themselves utterly to the Dread Gods. In this death, their souls are weighed by the blood they have shed and the trophies they have taken. If they are heavily laden in burden and dark of spirit, the Gods might choose to breath new life into their still form. So risen, their spirits are torn between this world and the next, and they continually hear the wailing of their sacrifices and the whispers of the Gods. Only then can they claim to be a Prophet, one who has walked the path of bones and returned, a true visionary in the eternal Hunt.

"The song cannot be heard by those who strive to silence it. It cannot be heard by those who guard their impulses. Though one lifts a weapon, they are not a killer. Though one feels hunger, they are not a hunter. We become these when we give in to our base instincts and, in the most holy manner, slay in the name of those who made us to do so. And then, with the sound of blood rushing in the veins, can the song finally be heard. And when it is heard, our joyful hearts wish to share it." - Yaga Xoshawv, excerpt from his "Sword Songs"
