Wizards

Originating with the Council of Archmages, Wizards have become a staple at many events and functions. Wizards are known for defeating storms, preventing all manner of misfortune, and making most gatherings more enjoyable. Wizards go on quests of all types, and are usually interested in undertaking new adventures and sidequests wherever they are presented. Wizards rarely turn down the opportunity to utilize their craft.

Wizarding As A Job

Wizarding is a well-respected profession within the DARP community, with long standing traditions and customs. Wizards are usually sanctioned and licensed by a larger Wizarding organization. The largest, oldest, and most prestigious Wizarding organizarion is the Wizard Council. Many talented practitioners of the mystic arts boast membership, and council wizards are diverse in their knowledge and skills in all manner of spells, sorceries, arts, crafts, etc.

Tools Of The Trade

Wizards usually wear robes and hats of some sort, and carry all manner of artifacts and apparatuses to aid them in their adventures. The items in the inventory of the average wizard may include:

  • Wizard Staff
  • Magic Wand
  • Familiars
  • Crystal Ball
  • Books (usually containing spells or recipes, sometimes just containing notes)
  • Magic Bags of all shapes and colors
  • Seeing apparatuses (such as goggles, glasses, spectacles, or monacles)
  • Maps
  • Alchemical ingredients
  • Potions
  • Extra Hats
  • Staff Crafting Supplies

Wizards Among The Larger Magical Professional Community

Wizards are considered a staple at most magical functions, and where magic is at play, a wizard is close at hand. Wizards tend to get along with most other magical professions, including Warlocks, Shamans, Sorcerers, and Sages. Witches, however, tend to have an antagonistic relationship with Wizards. They often trap, confuse, curse, muddle, befuddle, steal the souls of hapless wizards who are caught alone. As a result, most wizards travel together in parties, and engage outsiders at a distance.

Combat

Generally speaking, wizards tend to do poorly in close quarters, as many spells require arm-waving, shouting, and usually lots of maneuvering of their staves, wands, and other apparatuses. They may escape such places for less confining areas if threatened.

Races Of Wizards

The topic of race can sometimes be a hotly contested issue, as many other professional groups and peerage organizations my discriminate against certain races, especially those considered monster races. Wizards can come from all backgrounds, and are accepted for their knowledge and proficiency with the craft. To quote a well-respected Wizard Council member on the matter:

"When one becomes a practitioner of the mystic arts, one eschews the shackles of their humble beginnings; a wizard is first and foremost a wizard, and all else second."

Wizard Terminology

List Of Important Wizarding Terms

This is a list of terms that all wizards should know, in order to help them in their quests. Non-wizards may also take note, as it may save them from a grave breach in etiquette.

Apprentice
When a wizard needs aid with his staff, a wizard must not utter the phrase "can someone hold my staff?" A staff is an important artifact to a wizard and must be treated as such. A wizard may ask another wizard (or trustworthy non-wizard) to be their apprentice. The position generally lasts as long as the wizard needs aid. A wizard may go through any number of apprentices in a single night.
Archmage
This is typically a person within a gathering of wizards who holds the components necessary for crafting wands and staves. The wizard is chosen by their peers as the one least likely to wander off, and most proficient at staff-crafting.
Council Wizard
The term has multiple definitions -
A wizard who is accepted by the Wizard Council as an adequate mage in their own right, 'OR'
A member of the Wizard Council itself; specifically, one of the Founding Nine.
