Jester's Court
Overview
The Jester's Court was formed at Octfest '08 during the 5-man tourney, where we were labeled "Team Doormat". Since then we realized that we wanted this unit to grow and actually become something. The Court is still based on the idea that this is just a game. We'd rather have fun on the field than to win every fight (cuz, we could if we wanted to). At the end of the day, we want to make sure everyone had a a good time.
History
The Jesters were originally formed out of 6 friends in Dunharrow. During Octfest '08 we joined the 5 man tourney where we got stomped by the larger units. We practiced, learned what it was to be a unit, and became alil more well known in Northern Illinois. We began to frequent Khador where we found our first petitioners. Although a few left for other units, it occurred to us that we are now an actual unit. We gained a few more numbers, came up with a hierarchy, and began to show more presence as a unit and as individuals. At Octfest '12 we were proud to be one of the last four units during two unit battles. This is also where Kaiu decided that we were going to start one of the unit battles IN Clan of the Hydra. We are currently looking to expand new membership, even if we have to give birth to them, while training current members to complete different goals within the unit and in real life.

This is a detailed comprehensive hierarchy for Jester’s Court a unit of the Belegarth Medieval Combat Sport (BMCS), as of 1:49 AM on August 31, 2010 written by Joshua “Quickie” Quick. Jester’s Court:
Ranking system
- Petitioner: show a test of skill, in which one must win roughly 2 of 5 battles with X jesters, as well as show a like mindset. Petitioning for this unit consist of giving up some rights to the group as a whole as well as being counted on for training, general fighting (when deemed), unit discussion (when deemed), and specific unit related events. Petitioners are in use of our name and image, if these are abused repercussions will be taken.
- A single war braid of the unit’s colors (black and white) will be presented to those wishing to petition upon the completion of the above tasks.
- Fighters can only be voted to petitioner status by way of the Court’s Council (influenced by member’s voice.)
- If at any time a petitioner fails to follow their set guidelines or fails to live up to the expectations given the Court’s Council has right to strip their status. This is only decided upon by unanimous vote.
- Fool: Effectively completed half of the required trials for Jester. (see trials below)
- A unit flag (borderless), dictating membership status, will be presented to those on trial upon the completion of the below tasks.
- Members receive a voice in any Court’s Council decision, use of unit property (i.e. armory and community armor), and specified rights within the unit.
- It is up to the individual member to obtain information regarding upcoming unit decisions and use of unit property through higher ranking officials (i.e. High Jesters, council members, War-chief).
- Members are required to fight as a unit during specified times, partake in trials and initiation rituals, and camp in the specified unit site during events (unless having previous notification and adequate reasons).
- If at any time a member fails to follow their set guidelines or fails to live up to the expectations given the Court’s Council has right to either strip their status or have them re-establish their brotherhood through trials. This is only decided upon by vote of the entire unit.
- Jester: Effectively completed a series of trials testing skill, tactics, endurance, will, and brotherhood. (see trials below)
- A unit flag (With border), dictating membership status, will be presented to those on trial upon the completion of the above tasks.
- High Jester: Show willingness to progress as a fighter or as a member, partake in three instances of initiation trials (petitioner trials) as an acolyte assisting the petitioner in the fourth trial. And complete a secondary set of trials testing skill, endurance, will, leadership, tactics, and brotherhood on a larger scale. (see high trials)
- Jesters wishing to gain High Jester status must be nominated by a fellow member and voted on by the Court’s Council
- A worn trinket, dictating High Jester status, will be given to any member completing the above requirements.
- If at any time a member fails to follow their set guidelines or fails to live up to the expectations given, the Court’s Council has right to either strip their status or have them re-establish their brotherhood through trials. This is only decided upon by vote of the entire unit.
- Shaman: Complete an accumulative list of requirements and trials given by either the unit as a whole or a pre-existing Shaman (or persons of equal title).
- Must already have the rank of High Jester.
- Must complete: The Mark of the Hunted, The Mark of the Scarred, and The Mark of the Proven. Each completed Mark will be presented with a token to show completion. Tokens will be put onto the beaded necklace and presented to the new Shaman at the final ceremony.
- A beaded necklace, dictating Shaman status, of unit colors (black and white) will be presented to those on trial upon the completion of the above tasks.
- At any time, a Shaman may request to gain more tokens. This can only be done if it does not interfere with planned trials. The Shaman may pick which Mark they wish to gain and re-complete the task.
- Court’s Council Member: for ease of the decision-making process involving the unit. There are always an odd number on the council, all other members can influence the council and voice their opinion, but only the council members can make recorded votes. The council votes in members to its rank, if at any point in time a council member is no longer able or willing to fulfill his/her duties, they will be removed.
- Steward: a leadership position voted upon by the Court's Council and unit. The Steward will plan out non-fighting trials and work with sponsors to ensure the trial is at the abilities of the unit member. The Steward may also require unit members to do a trial (combat or non-combat) if they fail to uphold respect for the unit. If at any point in time the existing leader abuses his/her power, or is no longer able or willing to fulfill his/her duties, they will be removed.
- War-Chief: a leadership position voted upon by the Court’s Council and unit. The War Chief will plan out fighting trials and work with the sponsors to ensure the trial is at the abilities of the unit member. The War Chief may also require fighters to do a trial (combat or non-combat) if they fail to uphold respect for the unit. If at any point in time the existing leader abuses his/her power, or is no longer able or willing to fulfill his/her duties, they will be removed.
- This rank is in addition to the rank of High Jester or Shaman.
Fool Trials
As a result of a unit council meeting. We as a unit have decided, through vote of the high jesters, the specifics concerning the trials (i.e. the individual trials and order of, needed to be completed by all petitioners hence forth). Some specifics are subject to change due to member turn out and time restraints, keep that in mind. As of now, the list is as follows:
Fighting Trials:
1. 3/5 battles: self explanatory; all petitioners going through trials are expected to defeat all members three out of five times, or to the best of your ability.
2. Thermopylae: line battle with unlimited regen; petitioners going through trials will be versed against a line of members 1 v N (n being up to our discretion) petitioners have regen, line does not. Petitioners are expected to defeat them in a reasonable amount of time.
Non-Fighting Trials:
Jester Trials
Fighting Trials:
1. Gauntlet drill: petitioners vs high jesters/add ons; petitioners will work their way down the line of high jesters defeating each. They must beat all five in succession if they lose to one they are forced to start over until completed.
2. Information of the fourth and final trial will be withheld from petitioners until time of completion.
Non-Fighting Trials:
High Jester Trials
You must attain full membership as a Jester.
You must be sponsored by a High Jester.
Your sponsor and War Chief/Steward will tailor your trial to you specifically.
(Fighting)You are now granted any weapon combination, as will the defenders. These trials are pass or fail.
1) Thermopylae; Same as the membership trial, but you have a set amount of lives/tries.
2) Gauntlet; Same as the membership trial, but you have a set amount of time.
3) The Seven Rings; A center ring is made with three rings on the outside, and a ring attached to those. A fighter will be put in each ring. The Jester will make the first move and choose which ring they want to fight first. The other fighters will move one ring closer to the center, filling the center ring if planned that way. Injuries do not stay for the combatants and the Jester must defeat all of the ring in a single fight to clear it. Either Time or Lives will be discussed prior to the trial.
Shaman Trials
- Mark of the Hunted; The fighter will be segregated during Unit Battles. The goal is to out last EVERY member of the Unit. You do not have to win the Unit Battles. The fighter must engage in a fight every 90 seconds to avoid simply running around the field avoiding battles.
- Mark of the Scarred; The fighter will fight in an endurance trial similar to a squires endurance trial. You will weapon match. You may not use armor yet your foe may. This will either be a set number of fights or a timed trial. The unit may have to step in to ensure consistent fighters are available.
- Mark of the Proven; 5+ Gauntlet style 1v2 fights. This will be a timed trial.
