Lore: Was born in Trondelag in 861. Fled to Orkney in 864 with his father Ranulf Dagfinson after Harald Fairhair took control of Trondelag. Learned the ways of combat from a local petty king in Orkney. In 867 when he turned 16 he joined a ship and sailed to Iceland.
