The Void

From BelegarthWiki

What is the void...

The void is the space that exists between dimensions. For any plane that contains time or space they are built off the backdrop off the void. The void is simultaneously everywhere as it is layered behind the fabric of every reality and no where because there's not a place that is simply the "void". The void is devoid of any sense of time, it has simply always been there and always will be there, but within the void there is no past, present or future anything that was, is, anything that will be has already happened. The void is a maelstrom of chaotic energies. When entering the void it seems as if gravity spins in every conceivable direction. There is no up, there is no down, all the space that is the void is the same - devoid of ground or sky. A person who enters the void for the first time feel as if they're falling through space as the result of these phenomena. There is no sound in the void either. The void isn't dark. The swirling vortex of energies is a meld of reds and purples so things inside of the void are relatively well lit. This backdrop of colors is constantly shifting adding to the disorienting nature of the space.

A creature who enters...

Throughout time the fabric of any given universe sometimes breaks or ruptures which causes an entry point into the void. Sometimes this is the result of naturally occurring cataclysmic forces, other times particularly powerful magic can punch a hole in the fabric of a given universe, sometimes an individual creature, either a God or a person possessed of extremely potent will can create this tear. Whatever the cause sometimes things get into the void from outside of the void. Once they enter however it is as if they have always been there because the void is timeless. Over time then the void has slowly filled itself with things. While they may have once belonged to a time or place once they've been swallowed by the void, the void then becomes their home, subtly changing and warping them.

The first few seconds...

A creature that first falls into the void experiences the shifting gravity that appears to be going in all directions as it shifts back and forth. Without ground or sky the creature feels like they are falling endlessly, sometimes sideways, sometimes upwards. Whatever noises they were accustomed to in the world they came from cease as if a person was just muted. Around them the fabric of the void, the vortex of red and purple energies, swirls and pulsates. For most things the experience is enough to shatter their mind as this sudden transition for a world they know into a world that is utterly alien is processed by their mind. Creatures who lose their mind on entering the void eventually get consumed by the "native" creatures in the void, whether those are vicious plants, voidwarped creatures or other sentient beings that were just running low on energy as without a mind, and a sense of will it becomes almost impossible to defend themselves.

And then it stabilizes...

Assuming a creature's mind doesn't break on entering the void then their chances of survival increase significantly. The void, as a mass of shifting energy, is without form or shape but as a result can be easily manipulated by anyone with a strong enough will. A creature that wants to stop feeling like it's falling simply designates the space beneath them as the "ground" and the space above as them as the "sky". In so doing they can normalize the currents of gravity in the void and provide themselves with something to stand on. Once a creature has established this space around them they've begun to manipulate the void itself by bending it to their will. They can then further travel by moving in a direction and keeping this field of ground and sky attached to them. If they choose to stop moving they can continue to modify the space around them, creating whatever their mind can imagine out of the energy that swirls all around them. So long as they are in the void to focus their will, this area that they generate will remain intact. Creatures with strong enough will can make a created space continue to exist even after they leave, although over what would be perceived as time the void begins to consume and re-orient the space back into chaos from whatever order it was left in. Plants in the void in particular, tend to cause more elaborate spaces to crop up, as this helps provide a trap for prey. Once a creature has a handle on how the void works they can move about with relative ease. Creatures of low intelligence or of weak will often wind up trapped this way, never to be seen again in any reality.

Getting out...

If a creature has sufficient intelligence or sufficient will then they can often break free from the void. Notably, mages tend to have a higher rate of survival as their magic relies on their will and they're already used to manipulating energy. But should a creature remember where they came from they can break a hole in the void to re-enter the reality that they left. When they choose to re-enter their own reality they also are able to choose the TIME at which they re-enter their own reality. Since the void doesn't have time a creature that has entered the void becomes timeless themselves. They are effectively immortal as the process of falling into the void has irrevocably changed them. Whatever they were before they are now a voidling a child of the space between worlds.

Rules for voidlings...

As a result they no longer age and remain at whatever age they were when they first entered the void. If they choose to re-enter their initial reality at any given point in time then their reality shifts and turns to accommodate their existence. When they leave their reality then their reality shifts and turns to erase them. They can never meet themselves when they were younger because until they enter their home reality they never existed. Only when they are in their reality do they exist and so, moving forward and backwards through time can't screw up their timeline or cause inconsistencies. However, for the people inside of that reality the effects of having a voidling constantly re-arrange time can be a bit strange. All memories of a voidling are erased when they leave a timeline, and any picture they appear in they disappear from. Anything that they've written remains but any signature or mark they've left to signify that they wrote it disappears. Additionally any changes they've made to the timeline continue to remain in effect, so as one example people they've killed stay dead. This is mostly only relevant if a voidling then re-enters their reality going forward in time. If they re-enter their timeline going BACK in time then the changes they've made to the timeline haven't happened yet and as such are replaced by whatever changes they make in the past.

Powers and abilities...

A voidling can have been anything prior to entering the void. As an example a human who was a warrior and fell into the void comes back out still looking like a human (but now with very strange blood) and still has all their skills as a warrior. However, that warrior now also inherits certain powers from the void itself. Namely, they can freely manipulate time and space. Manipulation of time allows them to slow time down around themselves or other things, as well as speed themselves or another thing up by accelerating that things position in time. Being able to manipulate space allows a voidling to reshape reality around them if they're sufficiently powerful, but for most voidlings this just translates into minor teleportation. Anything forged from void energy, or that was normal gear previously but was taken into the void also inherits some of the odd void properties. Armor that's carried into the void absorbs energy that's hurled at it, making it so that it can't be damage by things like heat or cold. Weapons that are carried into the void become effectively ethereal, allowing them to pass through solid objects on the whim of their wielder. Gloves or other clothing might allow the wearer to phase through objects. A pair of boots worn into the void may allow a person to blink or move at great speeds. These properties remain true of these objects even after the person who carried them into the void is dead and gone.

Children and remembering...

The voidling is a voidling because once they've fallen into the void the energies of that place bind to their blood. If two voidlings have children the child inherits the blood of their parents. As a result that child can always remember their parents even as their parents shift in between realities. The child of a voidling also inherits the knowledge of the void from their parents though not necessarily all the same powers. To fully inherit the powers of their parents the child of a voidling must first enter the void at which point that child's blood absorbs the power of the void rather then the sort of residual echo they got from their parents. Also, while they have knowledge of their parent(s) and knowledge of the void if they don't have either enough power or enough will, they can still be consumed by the void. Since a voidling's power is bound to their blood they can leave a vial of their blood in a given reality to persist their own timeline in that space (at least until they re-enter and possible erase the moment in time they gave someone that vial of blood). A person who holds onto a vial of a voidlings blood can then track and remember that voidling even as they shift between the void and other realities. Voidlings do not remember one another unless they are in the same reality at the same time. However, unlike normal creatures a voidling remembers everything they know about another voidling whenever they meet. Being a voidling carries with it tremendous power as well as immortality. However, being a voidling also means that you no longer belong anyhwere, and that most of the time your deeds, good or bad, will be forgotten. Additionally constantly re-writing time itself can cause a fair degree of confusion as the voidling remembers every previous incarnation of a timeline in any given reality whereas the people in that reality only remember the current timeline. Voidlings seem like familiar face to anyone they meet but this may be in part because in some past iteration of a timeline a person has actually met that particular voidling before.
