Name Shards
Name Shards
A name shard is a fraction of one's name that holds a mystical value. It consists of a single phoneme or letter (it must audibly change how the name is pronounced if removed), and can be created from one's name by the fae. A member of the fae can convert part of a name into a name shard only with the permission of the name's owner. Even if it's merely permission based on a technicality.
Origins
The first name shards where invented by a kobold, orignally name Shields who generously let a fae named Fae borrow his name's letters. Unfortunatly, Fae didn't much feel like giving them back, leaving him as Hield. Fae then put one of the letters into a betting pool, which the allowed the kobold to eventually restore his name to Shield. This led to the invention of the Name Shard wager the very next night, where the kobold found themselves named Sields after some Poor Decisions™ had been made on his part.
Possessing the Name Shard of Another
A name shard cannot be destroyed by anyone other than the orignal owner. If its token is destroyed, the current owner of the shard can create a substitute token out of anything they wish without the need for fae abilities. Name shards can be appended or inserted into the current holder's name, should they so wish, although unlike with the shard's original owner, they needn't consume it.
Reclaiming a Name Shard
To reclaim a name shard back into one's name, a person must destroy the token representing it. This is traditionally done through consumption of the token, but can also be done with fire.
Name Shard Wager
Due to a name shard's intrinsic and its unfathomable value only to it's owner, one can only wager a part of their name into a new name shard against other name shards. However, once the name shard has been created and transfered ownership, it is free to be bet at whatever value the new owner can convince the table it's worth, or for absolutly nothing.
