Legio XXV was one of three currently recognized units in the realm of An Tir Dearg along with the Deshi and the Krayts. The Legion recreated the Roman military of the late Empire, with heavy Celtic and Germanic influence through the lens of the Belegarth rules set. For simplicity, certain historical ranks and personnel numbers have been removed or altered. Originally, The Legion served as the anvil in the Realm's hammer and anvil tactics and "Three Battle" formation, and as such, focused on heavy line infantry combat, with members having served as either heavy infantry, support infantry, or long range support. As the roster and capabilities/desires of its members have changed, greater flexibility is now allowed pertaining to the roles members may espouse, so long as historicty is maintained - reflecting the "barbarianization" of the actual Roman military. Minimum weaponry generally consists of a shield, a single blue sword, a punch dagger, and one to two javelins; armor is highly suggested but not required.

Annales (History)

Membership

After Tiberius Claudius Marcellus introduced Khalon Antonius to Belegarth and discussed their shared love of Roman history the Legion was founded in November 2009. The two men first set out to bring regimented order to their experiences with An Tir Dearg. Shortly thereafter Semtatem Rufius Clavicus, Apolous Brutus, and Drew the Russian Whore joined the ranks. Eventually, Drew left Belegarth, for personal reasons. In his honor, the 4 lb beastly red sword he left behind was doused in gasoline and used to unsuccessfully light the pile of wooden pallets that had made up the castles at the First War of Reckoning.

Legio XXV was pleased to be re-joined by Drew on Wedesnday, September 1st, 2010 swelling the ranks to its highest number to date. Most regrettably, on Wednesday, September 14th, 2010 Khalon Antonius began a sabbatical of undetermined length from Belegarth for personal reasons. On that date Tiberius Claudius was promoted to the rank of Legatus Legionis, Semtatem Rufius was promoted to the rank of Praefectus Castrorum, and Apolous Brutus was promoted to the rank of Primus Pilus.

Further changes occurred to the roster when Semtatem Rufius stopped attending practice for unannounced reasons shortly after Khalon Antonius announced his permanent end to fighting. Apolous Brutus was then appointed Praefectus Castrorum and Ocatavius Aurelius became the Primus Pilus. The Legion was proud to accept Octavius Aurelius' brother Arthfael and sister-in-law Ithel. Sadly, on December 9th, 2010 Tiberius Claudius saw the writing on the wall and gave the order for all remaining Legionnaires to disband due to only two other members sporadically attending unit and Realm practice. The vexillum awaits furled, for the day it will fly again.

Administration

The first unit practice occurred at Hidden Valley Park in St. George, UT and was held on a Saturday morning from 0800 - 1200. It was here that the Latin Drill & Ceremonies Manual that Tiberius Claudius Marcellus adapted from the Ermine Street Guard and the United States Marine CorpsDrill & Ceremonies Manual(under which he trained when he served from 2003 - 2006) was first implemented. Practice was shortly thereafter moved to Nisson park in Washington, UT (ATD's home field) on Saturday mornings from 0900-1200. Due to complications that arose, unit practice was moved to its current time, and a more dedicated focus on unit-related awards, tactics, garb & gear, and necessary discussions was taken in response to the website being created and unit rules being codified.

Technological Advances

After multiple failed weapons creations in the spring/summer of 2009 Tiberius Claudius created a strap tower shield from a blue plastic barrel and became the first Roman-style fighter in An Tir Dearg. He duck taped a large bed sheet to it, tried to tuck the copious amounts of material in on itself and called it good. Unfortunately, the beastly creation was 48" across. After sawing off a good foot of material with the serrated blade of a Swiss Army Knife, he re-taped the bed sheet to his now-legal shield. Once the open cell foam he used to pad it began to wear down and fall off, he re-padded with blue camp pad and sewed a proper draw string cover for the shield. It was at this time that the first shield decorations were added with yellow, white, and silver duck tape. They fell off or were otherwise destroyed by normal combat within the first 10 minutes of practice. It was another month until the designs were recreated with fabric paint and a linen tunica was sewn for minimal garb in time for Samhain, October 3rd, 2009. This shield served well for several months until the cover tore due to the fabric paint weakening the thread structure to normal hits.

On March 6th, 2010 Khalon Antonius acquired a sheet of lexan signage and drafted plans for the Gen II Scutum design. It has performed beautifully and altogether weighs approximately 9 lbs, down from the roughly 12 lbs of the Gen I Scutum plywood design. As of May 13th, 2010, all founding members have a Gen II Scutum at some phase of production. Interestingly and as a demonstration of his adventurous foamsmithing spirit, on Wednesday, August 18th, 2010 Khalon Antonius converted his Gen II Scutum into a plasti-dipped version - the Gen 2.5 model. It has passed safety checks in An Tir Dearg and is currently awaiting a coat of paint and the Legion will bring it to Samhain 7 in Ogden, UT during October 2010 to seek regional approval and advice on its construction and safety.

Constitutio (Organization & Structure)

Legio XXV has a rank structure that incorporates historical roles within the Roman Legions, adapted for Belegarth, and that is designed to both meet the needs of the unit as it grows as well as to provide opportunity and incentive for members to excel and advance. They are listed in order from lowest seniority to highest. All members, including the founders, start at the bottom and accomplish all prerequisites in order to advance in rank. As a result, a motivated new member has the ability to obtain a leadership position before a slower-progressing tenured member.
