Fallen Deity

From BelegarthWiki

History

They are the last living relics of their People, all of whom are long dead and forgotten by all but the most determined and magically gifted scholars. Some among the Fae or other Peoples may remember these cultures without much effort, but those same Peoples may not know of the Fallen Deity who lives on in an undying mortal shell. Some Fallen Deities remember aspects of their culture, but none remember everything.

Description

Fallen Deities are those who fell in battle and were not aided in time to be healed completely. Found near death by their friends, only a small spark of the Divine Essence remained, enough to bind them to a new, mortal body that cannot die. Some retain memories of their past and some of their abilities, some do not.

Despite some Fallen Deities having magic, it is not nearly potent enough to use for combat, but usually best suited to survival or crafting. They have a variety of skills and knowledge, and have no one unifying culture. Their bodies have limits beyond that of most mortals, but few ever manage to reach those limits.

They are generally benevolent, having fought against the same enemy that seeks to corrupt the hearts of Mortal Peoples to turn against their pantheons. Some continue the fight alongside new allies, some simply choose to forsake the War and live out their lives fighting others who, like them, will never know Death and the Afterlife.

Traits and Signifiers

Fallen Deities look much like the members of the lost civilizations and Peoples who once prayed to them. All are marked by symbols of Power upon their bodies (usually on their faces or hands and in bright colors) from those same long forgotten cultures. In the Celestial Wars, many forgotten Deities were killed. Some befriended Deities in other pantheons and offered their service, others simply fought skillfully and survived on their own for long enough that other pantheons took those whose People were long gone under their care.

Populations

Being so few, and generally nomadic, they are even more difficult to find than most rare creatures.

Misconceptions

Many people believe them to be capable of regaining their divine powers. This is not true. Their people are long dead, and even if an entire civilization began to worship any of them again, their new bodies cannot utilize the power of Belief and prayer.
