Persona

Shintaro is a Ronin hailing from a secluded region of Japan known as the Nansei Islands, or Ryukyu to Westerners. It is a chain of small islands to the north of Japan extending into the East China Sea. His father was an Eastern European trader who had been forced into exile and his mother a native of the isles. The islands are a bedlam of war, crime, and a general moral cesspool in the eyes of most. There are few vestiges of peace offered, but it is in this chaotic environment Shintaro gained his first taste of war.

At the age of 15, he joined a local Yakuza faction to help his family out financially. Known only as the 'Rakuyou', the Fallen Leaves. In comparison it was a more compassionate and productive gang, but still a group of criminals none the less. Selected for his above average strength and agility, Shintaro was selected to be one of their future swordsmen. He spent a year learning the virtue of wielding two blades at once. His first true swords were a Tanto and Wakizashi given to him by the Waka-gashira of his faction. He would soon apply all he had learned in that year.

Soon after his coming of age ceremony at 16, Shintaro killed his first man. It was a chance occurrence in the dark of night. He had been marked as a member of the Rakuyou and was to be assassinated before the Spring Wars between his gang and their rivals, the 'Mimei' or Early Dawn. Word of Shintaro's skill had spread across the isles from his training matches with fellow fighters for the Rakuyou. The would-be assassin fell swiftly to the young man's superior training and when Spring came, Shintaro knew too well the feel of a blade cutting through human flesh. He was awarded for his ferocity in battle with a master-work Katana and matching Wakizashi.

The Spring Wars came to an end and Shintaro had earned himself the mantle of a man-slayer. His family had since fled Ryukyu, having used his financial aid to stealthily charter themselves a boat away from the madness, to start anew in Edo. Having accomplished what he had set to do, he knew what was left. His life of crime must be left behind him, he wanted to a life of virtue, and to be the strongest warrior he could be.

He heard rumors of a sacred battleground somewhere in the West. A place where warriors of all types gathered in combat, and death was only temporary. The gods would resurrect warriors battle after battle. This land was known as Latnemir. With no delay, he made his way from the isles and to the West. Latnemir, however, was just a land of eternal suffering for those neither dead nor alive.
