The sufficient force standard is one of the most difficult standards to quantify in Belegarth. It is open to interpretation and varies from realm to realm. There is a continuously changing consensus in the sport as a whole as to what constitutes sufficient force.

At its most basic level, it is the force that would cause a disabling injury to a target if that target was struck with the historical analog to the foam version of the weapon. For example, how hard would you need to swing a historical broadsword to disable someone's arm in a single swing.

To better quantify hit force, a scale is included here.

0 - A tap. A person in no armor can discern contact (in combat).

10 - Slight contact. A person in chain armor can discern contact (in combat)

15 - A weapon checking light swing.

20 - No one in the sport considers this sufficient force.

25 - Light contact. A person in quality, thick, layered leather armor can discern contact (in combat).

30 - About 20% of the sport considers this sufficient force.

30 - A shot that will move an outstretched hand significantly that is offering resistance.

30 - A person in quality metal plate can discern contact (in combat).

40 - As hard as a typical 6-year-old child can swing.

45 - A clean, unblocked shot in a one-on-one situation will be taken by 50% of Belegarth.

50 - A weapon checking medium swing.

55 - A clean, unblocked shot in a melee combat situation will be taken by 50% of Belegarth.

60 - Shot that physically moves a limb when struck while in combat.

75 - Everyone in the sport agrees that this is a hit.

80 - As hard as a 5'4" 100 lb. athletically fit person is capable of swinging.

80 - A weapon checking hard swing.

80 - A body shot that physically moves a medium weight person (150 lbs) when struck.

90 - As hard as anyone should safely swing in combat.

100 - As hard as a 6'2" 200 lb. athletically fit person is capable of swinging.

Generally, Flails run on a different scale entirely because of their hit capacity, the herald or person hit by the blow may discern if the hit was sufficient.

The current consensus for melee combat sufficient force.

- A swing that connects solidly.

- It should hit around a 50 on the above scale.
