Beren Fellspear is of the line of Beornings, guardians of last crossings of the Anduin and the ancient roads through Mirkwood. His heraldry displays a rampant bear and two crossed spears. Currently, he is Thane of Rhovanion.

One of his first deeds as Thane was the capture and execution of Sir Artemis of Numenor, who was frequently known to cross the Misty Mountains to search for secrets of the most ancient evil in Mirkwood and the mountains to the north. Sir Artemis, although evil, was still a valiant fighter, and until Beren's reign as Thane, none in Rhovanion would stand up to him.

But in the first year of Beren's reign, he caught Artemis fording the Anduin, and challenged him to single combat in the shadow of the ancient Carrock. They began fighting in late afternoon, and the battle lasted well into the night under the full moon. Both warriors gave no quarter and asked none. As the sounds of battle rang, a crowd of the Freemen of Rhovanion gathered, and just before dawn, Artemis was finally overmatched and fatally wounded.

As penance for his countless evil deeds, Beren beheaded Artemis, placing his head upon a spear at the last bridge over the Anduin as a warning to all evildoers with business in Rhovanion. Beren stripped Artemis's knightly garb, quartered his body, and fed his remains to his pair of massive hunting dogs, Djuna and Skadi.
