Character story Saito Hajime was a samurai of the Shinsengumi of the late edo period; an era where gunpowder weapons were being mass produced. Choosing to rival the modern times with the bushido code and the obsolete katana, this goes to show what Saito Hajime's intentions might be here in Belegarth. Saito Hajime had already been discriminated even amongst other samurai for being a both left and right handed swordsmen and used techniques that were frowned upon under Kendo and western fencing. The Shinsengumi, the Edo Secret Police force that later rebelled against the false Shogun, was a safe haven for Saito to embrace his true self. Upon the fall of Shinsengumi's core members, Saito continued to lead the Shinsengumi in the Meiji era, raising it's flagged banner with the kanji meaning "Sincerity". To this day of Belegarth Saito Hajime's round shield cover is marked by the Shinsengumi's Symbol. It is unknown if this shield represents the vague fact that the Shinsengumi continues to live today, or that this shield honors the deceased samurai. Nevertheless, Saito's boardwork is sincere and true.
