Lore

(Spoilers for the Black Company novels ahead.)

Ares was born and raised in the town of Juniper, known for its ancient catacombs and extensive burial sites. As a custodian, Ares was responsible for the collection and care of the dead, ensuring that the deceased were properly prepared and interred according to the town's traditions. His duties included maintaining the catacombs, overseeing burials, and preserving the sanctity of the resting places.

Despite the grim nature of his work, Ares approached his role with a deep sense of duty and respect for the dead. His honesty and trustworthiness made him a well-respected figure among the townspeople, even in a world where such qualities were often exploited. He performed his duties diligently and honestly. However he was no stranger to the brutality that comes with defending that which others seek to defile. His duties were primarily to transport and entomb the dead; however in this world where opportunity often outweighs morality, Ares has had to draw a blade on occasion to strike down those who would seek their riches from the dead. Stories of his cold fury made its way to the slums of Buskin. His reputation (and body count) ensured that no one mistook his kindness for weakness.

Ares' jovial demeanor, dry wit, and sarcastic air often lightened the somber atmosphere of his work. He was a favorite among the local tavern patrons, where he shared stories and laughter, providing a welcome respite from the harsh realities of life in Juniper.

The Fall of Juniper The tranquility of Juniper was shattered by the arrival of the Lady's forces, seeking to consolidate power and eliminate any potential threats. The town became a battleground, and Ares found himself caught in the midst of chaos. Using his intimate knowledge of the catacombs and burial sites, he helped many townsfolk escape the worst of the conflict, guiding them through hidden passages and secure hideaways.

In the chaos, Ares also took it upon himself to protect the sanctity of the catacombs, ensuring that the dead were not disturbed or desecrated by the invading forces. Despite his efforts, the town fell, and in the torrent of magical attacks from both sides Ares was consumed in a vortex of energy that spat him back out someplace he had never been before.

Joining the Black Company In the aftermath, Ares wandered, disoriented and injured. Eventually he came upon what looked to be some sort of festival. There was the smell of food, the cheers of fans watching tournaments, and various craftsmen plying their trade. This seemed as good of a place as any to lick his wounds and recover for a while.

While laying low amongst the crowd, Ares spotted a familiar figure walking amongst the various stalls. A man with a silver ring around his neck, denoting him as a member of the Black Company. The Black Company made up some of the more elite soldiers of the forces the Lady brought against Juniper. Filled with cold rage and determination, he stalked the mercenary for hours, waiting for his opportunity to strike. Knowing he stood no chance at a straightforward attack in his current state, he patiently waited, even starting up a conversation with the mercenary at a stall to get a better look at his weapons and armor before they parted ways. As the sun began to set, another Black Company mercenary showed up and embraced Ares’ mark. Now was his chance. Slowly and quietly he crept up behind the man, and placed a dagger at his back. He spoke quietly, but firmly, telling him to send his companion away. His companion, a dark-haired warrior, had a knife drawn ready to defend their brother. After a few tense moments, they were sent away.

Ares led the man away from the bulk of the crowd as to not be seen committing this grisly deed. Unfortunately for the spirit of vengeance, the walk to find privacy was longer than anticipated. His mark, a man by the name of Arthas, had a chance to hold a conversation. During the walk, Ares interrogated Arthas and in doing so learned that he, and his company, had no dealings in Juniper. Nor did they even know where Juniper was. It seems this unit of the Black Company was displaced from their homeland and main fighting force many years ago. Further conversation convinced Ares that this man, and the Black Company of this realm, were not responsible for the destruction of his home. Arthas, in his kindness, offered a place by the Company’s fire to share in food and drink.

Unexpectedly, Ares seemed to fall in with the Black Company rather naturally. In the next few months, he would continue to camp with them and occasionally joined them in battle. Over time, the Company made an official offer to Ares to join the Black Company in earnest. Without a moment of hesitation, he accepted.

Within the Company, Ares' skills as a custodian were quickly adapted to the needs of a mercenary life. His meticulous care for the Company's gear and provisions, along with his knowledge of burial rites, made him a valuable asset. His strength, humor, and willingness to lend a hand earned him the respect and friendship of his fellow mercenaries.
