Illustration of a typical Khajiit Suthay-raht male.

The Khajiit are a race of feline creatures hailing from the province of Elsweyr, well-known for their keen Intelligence and Agility. While these traits make them superb thieves, Khajiit are also fearsome warriors, although seldom gifted with the skill to harness magical forces. This is not to say that Khajiit do not possess the ability, merely that strenuous training must be undertaken to make wielding magic a serious option, either in passive or aggressive actions.

Physiologically, Khajiit differ greatly from both the varied races of man and mer, not only in their skeletal structure (possessed of a tail and aft-jointed legs) and dermal makeup (the "fur" that covers their bodies) but in their digestion and metabolism as well.

Origins

We are the khajiits. The children of our great mother Pissran. From her we were given form and life. Our race mother is Dymphna who granted our race beauty and intelligence. She also granted us our graceful style as we fly through the air while the sun burns and our silent steps beneath the moonlight. But for someone so smart she’s also the source of stubborn nature. Our race father is Ku. He grants us our superhuman strength and ferocity. But as an embodiment of our primal nature he also grants us our fondness of booze and may be the source of our addiction to skooma. Finally there is race uncle Rift. Since the khajiit was taken by the void no one remembers if he came before or after our race mother and father. For all we know he has always been around. From Rift we’ve learned to have a clever tongue to match our clever minds. Sometimes that tongue gets us in trouble so from Rift we also draw fast hands to get us back out of trouble. When our fast hands get us into trouble, sometimes our clever tongues help us find our way out of it. We are khajiits and it is our great pleasure to meet you friends

Garb / Signifiers

Most khajiit have spent some or most of their life as slaves to the point where Elsweyr is just a name. This life of hardship, plus their own natural grace and agility have left most khajiit with at least some degree of mastery over thieving and lock picking. Khajiit tend to refer to each other by familial terms even when no blood relation exists because many khajiit grew up without ever knowing who their family were. As a result of this there aren’t many khajiit towns and instead khajiit tend to live on the fringes of society. When Khajiit do form groups they tend to stay on the move, either to protect escaped slaves or wanted thieves who are part of their family. These wandering groups tend to resemble either merchant caravans or a mobile circus in much the same way that gypsy’s behaved in Europe. While most khajiit are inveterate thieves and liars khajiit would never think to steal from one another. Such an offense would make a khajiit an outcast among their own kind, and then that khajiit would have nowhere to go.

Khajiit garb tends to reflect their nomadic tendencies matching the garb of other nomadic cultures such as bedouins, gypsy’s or arabian garb. Males of the species may be seen wearing a vest and harem pants. Females of the species tend more towards dresses. Both genders of the race prefer long, flowy garb which often includes scarves or sashes. Khajiit, as with many other monster races, have a love for all things that shine or jingle. As a result beads and other jewelry is common on the men while coin belts or other jewelry is common on the women.

Khajiit’s primary race signifier is their paw symbol. This is unique to each khajiit but follows the basic form of a paw with 4 fingers. (Down the line we may have a generic version of this). As far as physical identifiers khajiit have tails, claws and ears. Some (though not all) khajiit can also be identified from their cat-like face paint. Khajiit’s hold skeleton keys as a very important symbol so most khajiit will have a ton of keys either on their person or worked into garb as a symbol. The moon is a symbol that the khajiit also hold in high regard. Finally most khajiit can be found walking around with some skooma. Skooma varies from region to region so there’s no fixed formulation for it.
